PRI Makers Network

Program Related Investments (PRIs) are increasingly being used by foundations as an alternative to traditional grants. PRIs are investments made by foundations to support charitable activities that involve the potential return of capital within an established time frame. PRIs include financing methods commonly associated with banks or other private investors, such as loans, loan guarantees, linked deposits, and even equity investments in charitable organizations or in commercial ventures for charitable purposes.

To encourage the adoption of PRIs and provide more opportunities for collaborative investments, the PRI Makers Network was formed. An affinity group of large, small and medium-sized funders, the Network sought strategic counsel from the LGI team in the formation of a sustainable business model, the identification of the value-added services that would best serve members, and the refinement of basic language and messages about PRIs that would build the field.

The LGI team designed and conducted a series of one-on-one interviews with funders at various stages of engagement (from experienced PRI makers to those new to the field entirely). From the research, the LGI team was able to divide funders into 3 critical segments and identify specific barriers and messages to increased PRI engagement and Network membership.

The results of the research were used to inform the development of the Web site, collateral materials, and even to create appropriate “tracks” for the PRI Makers Network first annual conference.

Other LGI success stories in creating insightful and actionable research include the Ford Foundation Corporate Involvement Initiative and The Anne E. Casey Foundation Making Connections Initiative.
